Crypto Lender Genesis Files for Bankruptcy in New York

Crypto lender Genesis filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy late Thursday following the company’s troubles with liquidity triggered by two major collapses in the cryptocurrency industry last year. It came when the company was reportedly seeking to raise capital, but failed.

According to the official announcement, Genesis Global Holdco and its two lending subsidiaries, Genesis Global Capital and Genesis Asia Pacific, filed for a Chapter 11 voluntary petition in a Manhattan court. Barry Silbert-led Digital Currency Group controls these companies.

This can include some debt forgiveness by creditors or reduced interest rates or balances. Not all private persons are eligible for Chapter 13, high amounts of debt don’t qualify, and the person must file Chapter 11 or 7.
